Mason Bates’s Mercury Soul

Mercury Soul, the acclaimed hybrid musical event that has packed clubs from Chicago to its home in San Francisco, comes to the 930 Club for a groovy collision of DJing, classical pop-ups, and immersive production. Created by Kennedy Center’s composer-in-residence Mason Bates, the show is a co-production between the Center’s KC Jukebox series and the 930 Club. This visceral “classical rave” features new music by some of today’s most talked-about composers, with the D.C. premieres of works by Derek Bermel, Ted Hearne, Jennifer Higdon, Missy Mazzoli, and Bates himself, who does double duty as house DJ alongside DJ Justin Reed of Chicago’s illmeasures collective. This event is part of the Kennedy Center’s annual new celebration DIRECT CURRENT–an immersive showcase for cutting-edge contemporary arts and culture with a focus on interdisciplinary creations.
