In a loose adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Emma updating it into early 90s Beverly Hills, writer-director Amy Heckerling crafts a satire and ultimately a subversion of the, well, clueless rich Valley Girl trope of the 80s and 90s. Alicia Silverstone’s Cher is at the top of the social pyramid at her high school, and being as shallow as she is she decides to simultaneously play Cupid for two teachers while also taming the unpopular Tai (Brittany Murphy) with a full makeover. When the complex Tai starts overtaking her in popularity though, Cher has to reflect on her priorities and re-evaluate her life. Featuring early performances by Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd, Clueless has been a cultural touchstone since its release, inspiring and influencing such subsequent works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mean Girls, and much of the teen fare of the late 90s and 00s.
